What Is Methadone?

Methadone is a synthetic opioid medication used in the treatment of opioid dependence. It is administered in liquid form and is taken daily under the supervision of healthcare professionals.

Eligibility Criteria for the Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program (MMTP)

Patients wishing to participate in the Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program must meet the following requirements:

  • Diagnosed with opioid dependence.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Willing to participate in the program for a minimum of one year.
  • Have experienced opioid dependence for at least one year, with evidence of increasing opioid tolerance and previous unsuccessful treatment attempts through other methods.
  • Be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian as required by hospital regulations.
  • Agree to undergo routine urine drug screening.

Initial Methadone Dosing

  • Treatment typically begins with an initial dose of 20–30 mg of methadone.
  • The dosage is gradually adjusted according to the patient's individual clinical needs and response to treatment.
  • Methadone must be taken daily under the direct supervision of Methadone Clinic staff.

Discontinuing Methadone Treatment

Patients who wish to discontinue methadone treatment should inform the Methadone Maintenance Treatment Team in advance. This allows healthcare providers to gradually reduce the dosage and minimize the risk of withdrawal symptoms associated with the abrupt cessation of methadone.
